‘Hadestown,’ Other Productions Lauded at 2019 Tony Awards

NEW YORK – The 73rd Tony Awards, held June 9 at Radio City Music Hall and hosted by James Cordon, honored Hadestown with eight awards, including Best Musical and nods for Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Bradley King), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Rachel Hauck) and Best Direction of a Musical (Rachel Chavkin).

Other designers winning this year included Neil Austin (Ink), for Best Lighting Design of a Play and Rob Howell (The Ferryman), for Best Scenic Design of a Play. Howell also won a Tony for Best Costume Design, while Bob Mackie won the Tony for Best Costume Design of a Musical for The Cher Show.

This year’s ceremony also included a Special Tony Award lauding the design of the giant ape puppet in King Kong created by Sonny Tilders and Creature Technology Company.

On the audio side, Hadestown’s Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz won for Best Sound Design of a Musical and Fitz Patton (Choir Boy) took home the Tony for Best Sound Design of a Play.
