‘Hamilton’ Wins 11 Tony Awards, Including “Best Lighting Design from a Musical”

NEW YORK — In an evening that was at once somber, defiant and celebratory, less than 24 hours after the deadliest mass shooting in American history claimed 50 lives at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, the hip hop musical, Hamilton, which had received a record 16 Tony Awards, dominated the winner’s circle with 11 wins, including LD Howell Binkley’s award for “Best Lighting Design from a Musical.”

The other nominees for “Best Lighting Design for a Musical” included Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer (Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed), Ben Stanton (Spring Awakening) and Justin Townsend (American Psycho).

LD Natasha Katz won the Tony Award for “Best Lighting Design from a Play” for Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Other nominees included Justin Townsend (The Humans), Jan Versweyveld (Arthur Miller’s The Crucible) and Jan Versweyveld (Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge).

David Rockwell won the Tony Award for “Best Scenic Design of a Musical” for She Loves Me. Other nominees included Es Devlin and Finn Ross (American Psycho), David Korins (Hamilton) and Santo Loquasto (Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed).

David Zinn won the Tony Award for “Best Scenic Design of a Play” for The Humans. Other nominees included Beowulf Boritt (Therese Raquin), Christopher Oram (Hughie) and Jan Versweyveld (Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge.)

Along with “Best Lighting Design from a Musical,” Hamilton was honored with 10 other Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Daveed Diggs), Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. Although Hamilton retains the record for the most Tony Award nominations, The Producers still holds the lead for the most Tony wins, with 12 awards (from 15 nominations) in 2001.
