OAKLAND, CA – A rented truck packed with 4Wall gear plowed into a line of cars and a toll booth on the Oakland side of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge early Dec. 2, killing a toll attendant. The crash took place at about 5:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-80, killing Caltrans worker Si Si Han, 46, shortly after she came on duty.
The truck, rented from Monarch Truck Center in San Jose, hit several vehicles lined up at the tolls before smashing into the toll booth structure with enough force to be sheared in half. The driver of the truck, identified by police as Daniel Berk, 32, and a passenger were both ejected and injured. A total of seven people were reportedly injured in the crash.
Berk was charged with DUI and vehicular manslaughter, according to reports. He was listed in critical condition.
Han, who has worked for Caltrans for the past 10 years, is survived by her husband and a 10-year-old daughter.
RETRACTION/CORRECTION: PLSN has learned from numerous sources that, in contrast to initial reports, Daniel Berk was not an IATSE member, as we originally reported. PLSN deeply regrets the error.
