HOUSTON — Jeremy Choate, a lighting designer based here, who was known for distinctive designs for theatrical and dance performances, died Aug. 12 after being struck by a car while stopped at an intersection on his motorcycle. News reports said that the driver of the vehicle left the scene on foot before police arrived. Police have identified the driver as Shannon Garcia, 25, and were conducting a search for her whereabouts.
“He was a loved and respected member of the Houston arts community and we are devastated,” wrote Jennifer Wood, artistic director of Suchu Dance in Houston, responding to a news account of the accident by KHOU.
Along with Suchu Dance, Choate, a graduate of San Jacinto Community College, worked with Theater LaB, the Pink Ribbons Project, LD Systems, DiverseWorks, Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex, NobleMotion Dance, Fresh Arts and StageLight, among others.
Choate is survived by two young daughters and an ex-wife, with whom he shared custody.
