OAKLAND, CA — Jonathan Bernbaum, a prominent VJ and video artist affiliated with Circuit 5 Visuals, Knife Party and V Squared Labs, was among the 36 victims trapped in the Oakland Ghost Ship warehouse fire on Dec. 2, 2016. He was 34.
Bernbaum, a native of Berkeley, CA, graduated from Brandeis University in 2004 and got his MFA from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts in 2008. After an internship with Pixar Animation Studios in 2007, he worked on multimedia projects for Circuit 5 Visuals in 2010, V Squared Labs in 2013 and started working as a VJ for Australian EDM act Knife Party in mid-2014.
His affiliations included the Oakland-based Katabatik experimental music community, which also lost its sound engineer, Barrett Clark.
Bernbaum is survived by his parents, a brother, his grandmother and aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held Dec. 11 at Congregation Beth El, 1301 Oxford St., Berkeley. A burial service will follow Dec. 12.
