In Memoriam: Michael Philippi, 58

CHICAGO — Lighting Designer Michael Philippi died suddenly Oct. 27 while walking to Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, where he was working on a production of the Alan Gross play, High Holidays. The cause of death was unclear. Philippi, a resident of Baltimore, was walking from artists’ housing when he collapsed at around 1:45 p.m., according to news reports. The first preview for High Holidays, set for Oct. 31, has been canceled.

Philippi’s design credits include productions on Broadway and in Chicago for Death of a Salesman and Desire Under the Elms and in Washington, D.C. for King Lear.

Mr. Philippi's survivors include a wife, Miriam Hack, and a daughter, Megan.
