In Memoriam: Todd Morgan, 59

LOS ANGELES — Todd Morgan, one of the founders of Jan-Al Cases, died on Dec. 20, 2011 after a long illness. He was 59. Prior to joining Jan and Muffie Alejandro, Morgan had worked at Studio Instrument Rentals (where he met Jan) and at Almo/Irving, a music publishing firm. The photo here, taken in 1984, a year after the company was founded, shows Jan Alejandro on the left and Todd Morgan on the right.

Morgan was the creator of the Banana Case for shipping large screens — so named because the two lids peeled open to reveal the screen inside. The case forced a two-man lift, preventing drops and screen breakage. It was an instant success and was an example of Morgan’s ability to incorporate the needs of end users in his designs.

Morgan is survived by his wife, Darlene Matura Morgan, his siblings, and is also remembered by many friends and professional colleagues who recall his sharp wit and detailed case designs. Condolences sent to Jan-Al Cases (www.janalcase.com; http://www.janalcase.com/contact.html) will be passed on to his family.
