Lasers Part of Sensory Overload on Katy Perry Tour

LOS ANGELES — Katy Perry’s California Dreams tour is anything but minimalist, with dancing gingerbread men, whipped cream, and machines blowing cotton candy scent into the audience. The crew with Laser Design Productions worked with director Baz Halpin to amp up the sensory overload even further.

For Perry’s song, “E.T.,”  the lasers create a “multi-level visual experience,” according to Laser Design Productions, with five laser systems involved. They include one 20W full color laser, two 15W full color lasers and two green yags, filling the stage with syncopated beam and scanned looks.

Lorenzo Cornacchia, president and designer of Laser Design Productions, placed the yags offstage and positioned the color lasers above the stage.

“We have two full colors, right and left of the staircase, and they’re basically up about 10 feet on a vertical truss so they can clear everybody,” said Cornacchia. “There’s also one laser that’s hanging upstage center. It projects down and hits the flap on the downstage edge.”

The laser projectors create a full range of effects: rotating cones, beam chases, morphing scans, mirror bounces and color cycles — all synched to the choreography and pop music.

For the song, “Who Am I Living For,” laser operator Brian Van Trigt uses diffraction effects to harmonize with the lyrics, creating a static look as lasers fan over the audience’s heads, incorporating an array of atmospheric scans and beam effects.
