Liberty Bell Lit with LED Lighting

PHILADELPHIA — It may have a crack and has long been silent, but as an icon of American freedom and independence, the Liberty Bell resonates far and wide. It draws viewers 24 hours a day to the glass and steel Liberty Bell Center, where the 2,000 lb. bell has been housed since 2003.

Recently, the National Park Service opted to update the lighting with more than 2,700 MSi iPAR 38 LED fixtures. “First let me say how proud we are to be lighting the Liberty Bell,” said Bruce Johnson, MSi managing partner. “It is a great honor, but it is also a perfect place to show off the many bonuses offered by our LED lights.”

Along with the well-documented energy advantages of LED fixtures over traditional tungsten light sources, Johnson noted the savings in maintenance costs as well for the Liberty Bell Center, where fixtures are lit around the clock. Instead of being replaced every two months, the LEDs can last for a seven-year span.

Johnson added that there were no trade-offs required in terms of light quality either.  “The color rendering index of our newest LED’s now meet or exceed that of the traditional tungsten halogen lighting.”
