At its NAMM U breakfast session on Jan. 23, NAMM president and CEO John Mlynczak presented Lana Negrete with a big check for $10,000 out of its recently-formed fund for California wildfire relief fund made out to Outreach Through the Arts, a Santa Monica, CA-based charity now actively providing musical instruments and other support for those affected by the wildfires earlier this month.

Negrete, mayor of Santa Monica, is co-founder of Santa Monica Music Center, which set up the Outreach Through the Arts charity in 2011 to provide scholarships for private and group instrument instruction, experience in music production, and access to music performances for the underserved youth of Los Angeles. Along with its efforts to retrieve instruments from buildings before they burned, OTTA has played a role in helping young musicians get access to musical instruments after their own instruments were lost to fire.

The funds come from NAMM’s recently-established wildfire relief fund that started with $50,000 from NAMM, which had grown by an additional $45,000 in donations as of Jan. 23, according to Mlynczak.
