SUNNYVALE, CA – Osram Opto Semiconductors announced a 30 percent boost in the efficiency of red thin-film LEDs under development. The advance, which bodes well for smaller, brighter and cooler fixtures, also holds promise for LED products with better color rendering. "This will benefit all applications that use high-efficiency red LEDs, particularly projection applications," said Dr. Wolfgang Schmid, who is responsible for developing this chip technology at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. "We expect to start equipping LED products with the new thin-film chips in about a year's time."
Osram Opto Semiconductors said improved material properties, an optimized chip platform and greater output efficiency added up to the overall gains in efficiency. The InGaA1P chip was packaged in a Golden Dragon Plus LED prototype.
