NEW YORK – Sonny Sonnenfeld, a legendary lighting salesman, educator and architectural lighting designer, died Feb. 10, 2016 at the age of 96. This year, his memory will be honored with a new scholarship announced by Stage Seminars, sponsored by Philips-Strand Lighting.

Sonny was a theatrical lighting salesman, a teacher, an author, and a practitioner. Sonny was the New York City sales manager for Century Lighting (now Strand), a partner in Lighting & Electronics, and a sales representative for Colortran, ETC, Wybron, and again at Strand. Sonny founded the Broadway Lighting Master Classes. Sonny interfaced, on a regular basis, with theatre consultants, Broadway lighting designers, architects, consulting engineers, and architectural lighting designers. He has contributed to the professional development of many of today’s leading architectural lighting designers. He enjoyed creating the lighting designs for many non-professional shows.
The 13th Annual Stage Lighting Super Saturday workshop, continuing its practical and hands-on educational presentations, will take place on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts located at 721 Broadway in New York City. Super Saturday is produced by Scott Parker with the help of the NYU Tisch School.
Stage Lighting Super Saturday is a one-of-a-kind event held in New York City specifically designed to enhance, answer, and benefit the interests and abilities of all involved in the application of innovative stage, architectural, and entertainment lighting. To accomplish that goal, the intensive all day Stage Lighting Super Saturday Seminars are led by active members of the Theatrical Lighting community for the benefit of new, aspiring, and advancing stage and event designers. Emphasis is placed equally on inspiration, training, and technical application. Seminars focus on methods and equipment that can get the job done as originally visualized, and specific implementation of both new and established products to achieve the desired results.
Intensive subjects include Stage Lighting 101 for those new to the art; the use of conventional long established luminaires; the latest LED, and traditional Incandescent and Arc Source instruments; the implementation of color, special effects, mood and scene lighting; and choosing among the myriad of helpful mechanical implements such as consoles, moving lights, computers, and many others.
Approximately 20 technical specialists, as well as manufacturers of superior equipment, will demonstrate techniques and newly available cost-effective products. Among the present and past manufacturing contributors, all noted for their lighting expertise and practical implementation, are such stalwarts as A.C.
