Pipe-and-Drape Backdrop Collapses Mar Political Events

SAN ANTONIO, TX — A staging mishap interrupted Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina’s speech to a conference of women entrepreneurs gathered at the Marriott Rivercenter in San Antonio on Sept. 27. Portions of the pipe-and-drape style backdrop fell from height after wavering, with metal poles and fabric tumbling onto the stage and crowd.

Although no injuries were reported, the near-miss in San Antonio posed greater hazards than another pipe-and-drape collapse that took place Sept 10, during Hillary Clinton’s outdoor “Grassroots Organizing Meeting” at the University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee. The risk of damage from that collapse, which took place before Clinton took the stage, was mostly symbolic; the falling backdrop knocked down the American flag.
