Robe DigitalSpots Deployed at AUSA Convention

WASHINGTON, DC — Scecon, a Virginia-based design and fabrication company, used Robe DigitalSpot 7000 DTs to project onto a “floating touch screen” at the center of a large booth at the 2009 Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Convention held in the Washington Convention Center. Scecon’s president and lead designer Brian Scott designed the booth concept. Stephen Clarke, principal technical designer, developed the “touch presentation” system.

The theme of the booth — for the U.S. Army Chief of Staff — was to educate the Army’s leadership about the role and use of social media as an effective communication tool.

Clarke specified two Robe DigitalSpot 7000 DTs (overlaid) for the project. The floating screen was a quarter-inch thick interactive rear projection unit, suspended between four 12 inch pieces of clear plate glass in a metal stand.

Robe DigitalSpots were chosen for the application because of their “superior features as an intelligent lighting and projection instrument,” said Clarke. They required a projector that could be easily mounted and trimmed to an extreme elevation angle, and with the warping facilities to correct the significant keystoning of the image. This enabled them to conceal the units in the ceiling of the stand, out of sight to viewers, creating a futuristic display to WOW the audience.

The content was a live video capture from a PC, input to the DigitalSpot via its VGA/DVI capture card — another factor in Clarke’s choice of the Robe fixture.

This was the first show on which Scecon’s has used DigitalSpots, and follows extensive research and several months of testing by Clarke.

The DigitalSpots were programmed using a grandMA lighting console by Jeff Holt and Will Johnson with Atmosphere Lighting in Washington, DC.

“It’s not just a light anymore,” Clarke said. “From a video engineering standpoint, the DT7000 has proved that it can go  beyond the traditional motion light applications. The DT7000 helps meet the creative video demand solutions of the entertainment and presentation industries.”
