WESTAMPTON, NJ – The Burlington County main library recently invested $6.2 million to expand its facility including a new roof, heating/air-conditioning, a 250-seat auditorium, an expanded teen area, a new family area and an expanded indoor/outdoor café.  The auditorium was designed to be multifunctional, which presents challenges to those who would construct it.  A projection booth was necessary to put on “Friday Night Movies,” but a community theater needed rigging to hang lighting, curtains and sound.

A cost effective solution to the rigging needs was offered by Burlington County company Starlite Productions. Starlite’s Project Manager Brandon Creel offered several options to the library officials, including ETC’s Prodigy Hoist with power and control distribution built in.

Says Creel, “The original drawings left the fixed FOH lighting position inaccessible because of the permanently installed seats below.  The Prodigy Hoist however, is raised and lowered by a powerful motor that, along with the compression tube, beam clamps and loft blocks can be hidden neatly above the ceiling tiles.  The benefit of this particular application is that the lighting bar can be lowered to just above the seats allowing the operator to change lights, gel and focus from the ground.  The innovative Prodigy design eliminates the need for bulky cables that are unsightly and would have to be managed along with the light bar itself.”

The motor was installed above an aisle for convenient service and annual inspections and every lift line is located in the center of a drop ceiling tile.  Starlite worked with the general contractor Puente Construction Enterprises and electrical contractor JJS Electric to coordinate installation and ensure the roof could handle the loads.  IBEW electricians installed the hoist system under Creel’s direction and supervision.

“The finished product follows both form and function,” says Starlite’s Carl Clegg. “The hoist looks seamlessly integrated with the building and performs flawlessly for those who need to use it.  The ETC Prodigy P1000E Hoist is the perfect solution to this new community theater’s FOH needs.”
