VANCOUVER, BC – Light sculptor Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has incorporated Syncrolite fixtures in Vectorial Elevation, a work commissioned by the 2010 Cultural Olympiad, the City of Vancouver's initiative to celebrate artists along with athletes. The outdoor light show is similar in concept to other artworks that the Mexican/Canadian artist has staged in cities around the world since 2000.
In this case, Lozano-Hemmer has positioned 20 robotic Syncrolite searchlights around Vancouver's English Bay. As in previous Vectorial Elevation incarnations, instead of creating all the designs himself, Lozano-Hemmer set up a Web site where Internet visitors can participate.
After using a Web interface to create designs using the 20 fixtures, which together require some 200 kilowatts of power, these Internet "guest LDs" are allotted an eight-second timeslot where their design is flashed over Vancouver's skies.
Designers are alerted by email when their designs can be seen, and even if they're not in the Vancouver area themselves, they can watch via four Web cams set up to capture the lighting design.
Design submissions are being accepted throughout most of the month of February, 2010. Actual design visibility was expected to vary with natural weather conditions.
Other examples of art that are part of the Cultural Olympiad include creative expression through music, dance, theatre, visual arts, film and other art forms.
