CARSON, CA – Los Angeles’ KIIS FM radio station hosted on May 11 its annual Wango Tango Concert at The Home Depot Center with a capacity crowd of 27,000. This year’s lineup featured FloRida, Maroon 5, Will.i.am, Fall Out Boy, Demi Lovato, Miguel, Avril Lavigne, Bruno Mars and more.
AEG production manager Kevan Wilkins -just back from the Coachella and Stagecoach Festivals – tasked Visions Lighting with building a massive roof, stage, lighting and video package to satisfy the high-profile acts and compliment the outdoor field venue.
The load bearing roof system was built 65 wide x 45 deep x 45 feet high with two load bearing wings at 60 foot wide x 20 foot deep x 45 foot high. A 14-foot circle truss faced the roof front for radio station branding and three white-scrimmed and LED-toned 20-foot circle trusses were built into the design.
The main stage, provided by Visions, was 96 feet wide x 60 feet deep x 6 feet high. Its 32-foot deep “T” stage thrust into the audience to create two VIP standing areas in front of the stage. All Access Staging provided a 56-foot turntable to keep the flow of the show going.
For the lighting package, Todd Roberts of Visions Lighting, designed a system that would fill the stadium with a dramatic show and for that 52 Elation Platinum Beams 5Rs were “just the ticket,” he said. Another Elation Professional product chosen was the ELED QW Strip, a meter long strip with 18 5W Quad LEDs. Roberts used 18 of these high output strips in his design.
“Wango Tango is a signature event, “said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “Todd and the entire Visions Lighting team did a beautiful job creating this design and we’re very proud that Elation played such a big part in it.”
Roberts also used Visions’ newest lights, the Chauvet Nexus 4 x 4 on the 100-foot circle truss that arched the center of the turntable with 10 Nexus 4 x 4s on each side.
“We got a lot of positive feedback on the turntable arch design with the Nexus 4 x 4s,” said Roberts. “That and our 6mm VisionTec LED panels for the center screen and the four LED stage columns were our big winners for the show. This is our first year providing video elements to partner with our lighting and we are proud of the results.”
Cameras, side LED screens and video direction were provided by NEP, Screenworks.
“It was great production collaboration for this show,” Roberts added. “We are really happy to be associated with this team of professionals.”
While Roberts was the company lead on the event, he gives all the credit for the success to his staff: lighting programmer Brandon Dunning and master electrician Colin Johnson, along with other crew members Rick Prather, Rafa Avila, Shuan Grout, Canin Campbell, Rudy Carbajal, Aldo Parenti, Jon Jordan and Derrick Seibert.
