LAS VEGAS – The XS Nightclub at the Wynn Casino and Resort faces off against competition from the newly-opened Cosmopolitan and other City Center resort attractions with lighting created by the LD for Wynn Resorts, Tom Kowalczuk, lighting programmer and lead lighting technician Brian Gysegem and lighting console operator Josh Packard. XS features a 10-foot rotating mirror ball chandelier encircled by a Martin lighting rig of MAC 250 Krypton and MAC 250 Wash luminaires. A Jem K1 Hazers and a Jem ZR33 Hi-Mass fogger are used for mid-air projection and atmospheric effects. And the lighting crew is now using Martin's new M1 lighting desk for control.
"The M1 became the obvious choice," said Gysegem, crediting the board for its small footprint and abundance of playbacks on the control surface, and also commending Packard's ability to create and mix music as he is operating and programming the lights. "His timing shines because of it."
Martin touts the M1 for its simplicity, and also for dual-core processor, which allows for a fast and responsive user interface, even if hundreds of playbacks and effects are activated simultaneously. At XS, the M1, provided by 4Wall Entertainment of Las Vegas, replaces an existing Martin Maxxyz Compact lighting desk, which has been transferred to Tryst Nightclub at Wynn Resorts.
"Because of the numerous choices with Maxxyz modules we had plenty of options to upgrade the Maxxyz Compact," Gysegem said, "but at the end of the day it made sense to move that board to XS' sister club Tryst. This gave us a true control surface in both clubs and ultimately upgraded Tryst from a Maxxyz PC."
