NEW YORK — Nominations for the 70th annual Tony Awards ceremony were announced May 3. Hamilton received a record 16 nominations, including Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Howell Binkley) and Best Scenic Design of a Musical (David Korins). The awards ceremony, to be hosted by James Corden and broadcast live on CBS, will take place at New York’s Beacon Theatre on June 12.
The other nominees for Best Lighting Design of a Musical include Shuffle Along (Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer), Spring Awakening (Ben Stanton) and American Psycho (Justin Townsend).
The other nominees for Best Scenic Design of a Musical include American Psycho (Es Devlin and Finn Ross), Shuffle Along (Santo Loquasto) and She Loves Me (David Rockwell).
Tony Award nominees were also announced in the Best Lighting Design of a Play and Best Scenic Design of a Play. Nominated LDs include Natasha Katz (Long Day’s Journey Into Night), Justin Townsend (The Humans) and Jan Versweyveld (The Crucible and A View from the Bridge). Nominated scenic designers include Beowulf Boritt (Thérèse Raquin), Christopher Oram (Hughie), Jan Versweyveld (A View from the Bridge) and David Zinn (The Humans).
With a record 16 nominations, Hamilton received more Tony nominations than any other Broadway production staged in the last 70 years. Other productions received multiple nominations this year, including Shuffle Along (10), She Loves Me (8), Long Day’s Journey Into Night (7) and Eclipsed and The Humans (6).
