White Light, entertainment lighting specialists and sponsor of the Best Lighting Design category in the 2014 Olivier Awards, would like to congratulate this year’s nominees in the category: Paule Constable, Paul Pyant, Peter Mumford and Tim Lutkin & Finn Ross – as well as all of the nominees in other categories.
The Olivier Awards are presented by the Society of London Theatres, to mark the best productions to open in London’s West End over the last twelve months. The nominees were announced on March 10th; the awards will be presented on Sunday 13th April at a star-studded event to be held at the Royal Opera House, with live streaming of the show as well as other live events taking place in the Covent Garden Piazza.
In the lighting category, Paule Constable was nominated for her work on The Light Princess at the National Theatre, Paul Pyant for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Peter Mumford for Ghosts at the Almeida and then the Trafalgar Studios, and Tim Lutkin & Finn Ross for Chimerica at the Almeida and then the Harold Pinter Theatre. Lighting designer Michael Hulls was nominated in the Outstanding Achievement in Dance category for his body of lighting work, including Ballet Boyz – The Talent at Sadler’s Wells.
Other design nominees include, in the Best Set Design category, Bob Crowley for Once, Es Devlin for Chimerica, Mark Thompson for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Tim Goodchild for Strangers on a Train, and in the Best Costume Design category, Thompson for Charlie once again, Nicky Gillibrand for The Wind In The Willows, Rae Smith for The Light Princess and Soutra Gilmour for Merrily We Roll Along. Sound designers Carolyn Downing, Clive Goodwin, Gareth Owen and Simon Baker were nominated for their work on, respectively, Chimerica, Once, Merrily We Roll Along and The Light Princess.
As is often the case, White Light supplied lighting equipment to a great many of the nominated productions, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Ghosts, The Weir, Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter and Alice, The Cripple of Inishmaan and Oh What A Lovely War.
White Light will also be supplying the Awards Ceremony itself – both the rig inside the theatre, designed as it has been for the last few years by Ben Cracknell with a set design by Es Devlin, and the stages outside in the Piazza.
“Congratulations to all of the nominees – lighting and otherwise – at this year’s Oliviers, and indeed to everyone who’s been involved with theatre in the West End over the last year, which has seen an enormous range of excellent shows,” comments White Light’s Managing Director, Bryan Raven. “We look forward to celebrating with everyone on April 13th”.
The Oliviers continue London theatre’s award season, which has already seen both the What’s On Stage awards and the Off-WestEnd.com Offies presented; the Best Lighting Designer categories were won by Adam Silverman for Macbeth at the Trafalgar Studios in the former, Howard Hudson for Titanic at the Southwark Playhouse and Lizzie Siddal at the Arcola in the latter.
