TENERIFE, Canary Islands – The dance floor at the Butterfly Disco Pub in the Playa de las Americas resort area on Tenerife, Canary Islands collapsed at about 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 26, injuring 40, according to reports. Of 22 transported to the hospital from the venue, two sustained serious injuries.
The revelers had been on the dance floor at the time of the collapse, dropping close to 10 feet into a rubble-strewn area below that had been set up as an area for bingo gaming, according to reports. It was vacant at the time of the collapse.
Witnesses to the collapse described how a four-square-meter section of the floor appeared to “break in half” as it collapsed and the nightclub patrons fell.
