GUANGZHOU, China – The Guangzhou Ballet Group's performance of "Night Returning through Whirling Snow" won the coveted Wenhua Award at the 9th China Art Festival. LD Sun Tianwei provided the lighting design, with a Compulite Vector Red and two Vector Violets chosen for control. Part of the purpose of the festival, which ran May 5-25, was to encourage Chinese art and culture to expand to other countries. Guangzhou Coemar Equipment provided the lighting gear for Guangzhou Ballet Troupe, which won top honors.

The Guangzhou Ballet Troupe, established in January 1994, is headed by Zhang Dandan, a leading dancer. The troupe has performed at locales ranging from Moscow to Paris and Canada, winning numerous awards over the years.

"Night Returning through Whirling Snow" is an adaptation of a well-known play by Wu Zuguang. Depicting a tragic love story, it rose to prominence in the 1960s and has also been adapted to film, TV and opera.

Before acquiring their own Vector consoles, the Guangzhou Ballet had rented consoles, allowing for a lengthy testing period to determine what worked best for their needs. The three Compulite consoles have been used for more than 100 ballet performances in all, including ballet productions staged at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (using Vector Red), Guangzhou Beilei Theatre (Vector Red and Vector Violet), Zhongshan Culture and Art Centre (Vector Violet), Guangzhou Opera House (Vector Violet) and Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center (Vector Red and Vector Violet.).

Sun Tianwei, who was also in charge of the set design, also leads the Chinese Political Division's Ensemble of Songs and Dance for the Air Force. He is also the director of the China Stage and Art Design Association.

For "Night Returning through Whirling Snow," Sun Tianwei used a muted palette dominated by black, white and gray, to correspond to the tragic storyline. The production's console operators appreciated the cue creation and deletion features, and Sun Tianwei also credited the Vector consoles for their ability to control the moving lights and digital projections that were used.
