MENDIG, Germany — Separate lighting strikes injured crew and campers attending the Rock am Ring festival in early June. The first strike affected eight production crew members working backstage at around 1 a.m. on June 6. Less than three hours later, another 25 campers were injured by a second strike.
Reports indicate that while the injured were taken to a hospital for observation, there were no direct hits or fatalities from the strikes and all those affected were in “good health.” Organizers also reportedly offered campers shelter in tents grounded for protection against further lighting strikes.
The 2015 event, which marked the 30th anniversary for the festival, was the first where the locale shifted from the Nürburgring auto racing track (i.e., the Ring) to an airfield in Mendig.
Many of the 90,000 attendees opted to camp for the June 5-7 event, which featured Foo Fighters, Slipknot, The Prodigy and Motörhead, among others.
