OLAVARRÍA, Argentina — A crowd surge pressing concertgoers against barricades in Olavarría, Argentina on March 11 left two dead and dozens injured. The outdoor rock concert featuring Indio Solari drew at least 300,000 to 350,000, about double the site’s 155,000 capacity and far more than the maximum 170,000 expected.
The population of Olavarría, a town about 220 miles from Buenos Aires, is normally about 111,000. The town’s mayor, Ezequiel Galli, cited 350,000 in a news conference. Other reports cited much higher figures, but those numbers were not confirmed by an official tally.
It was unclear who would be held responsible for the deaths and injuries, including those hospitalized after the event. Authorities were questioning all those involved, including the artist, who halted the show and asked for security to assist with some concertgoers in the front who appeared to be fainting, according to reports.
