COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Dozens of New Years revelers were reported injured when an outdoor platform’s structural elements failed. Hundreds of people reportedly fell a few feet to the ground, and at least 30 were treated at local hospitals for fractures, cuts from broken glass and burns.
The event was staged at the Colombo Hilton by Cantaloupe Playground, which noted that it had used a subcontractor for the stage. Cantaloupe Playground assumed responsibility for the accident, however, and pledged to pay for refunds for the $100-per-person event along with medical expenses for the victims.
