LONDON – London, UK-based Entec was asked by show producers Magic Sound to supply lighting and all associated rigging equipment plus crew for a show at Hammersmith Apollo, London by Malaysian Chinese Mandarin pop superstar Fish Leong.
This was part of her ‘Love Page’ world tour and coincided with celebrations for the Chinese New Year. The ‘Queen of Love Songs’ is famous for her love themed ballads, many of which have become popular karaoke hits.
Lighting designer Mr Wu (also known as Bevan) sent a plot to Entec and flew in to London from Hong Kong on the Friday night for Sunday evening’s gig, which was sold out and eagerly anticipated by the local Chinese community.
Entec’s project manager Peter Schofield ensured that all Bevan’s technical and creative requests were met. He worked with lighting technicians Tom Crosbie, Leo Tierney and Yuko Sano. They loaded in on the morning of the show and had the rig up, running and ready to be programmed by Bevan by midday.
There was a front and back truss and a 30 ft wide by 6 ft deep box truss in between over the stage, with two foot long extension bars extending from the upstage edge.
On the front were nine VARI*LITE 2000 Washes and eight 8-Lites, the latter pointed at the audience. Also rigged onto this were Le Maitre confetti cannons and confetti fans, which blasted into the audience on cue.
Seven VARI-LITE 2000 Washes and 10 VARI-LITE 3000 Spots were rigged around the box truss, used to wash the stage and light the nine-piece band below, and also to rear light Leong. There were also 16 ETC Source Four profiles to pick out individual band members and key light several different stage positions.
The 50ft span of back truss was made from heavy duty sections. On this were hung five VARI-LITE 3000 moving lights plus 40 ft of starcloth and a large LED video wall from Picture Works.
Plenty of visual dynamics and ‘architectural shaping’ were added to the performance with the floor lighting package. This comprised six vertical 12-inch truss towers, three positioned each side flanking the video screen, each toned with two i-Pix Satellite LED ‘bricks’ and with a VARI-LITE 2000 wash on top.
The set was built from a large two level Steeldeck structure. It had a platform / walkway along the back and a set of stairs descending in the front center, and also going down the back, where the quick change room was located. Each side of the stairs were three VARI-LITE 3000 Spots.
Two Pani follow spots and an Avolites Diamond 4 Elite console completed the lighting picture.
The rig offered plenty of diversity for beam work and all the coverage Bevan needed for the band and the star.
Show producer Tina Zang from Magic Sound, who first worked with Entec on a show last year, comments, “Lighting is one of the most important elements of our show. The service from Entec is excellent. They respond quickly and efficiently to any queries in advance, and everything ran extremely smoothly on show day.”
Audio equipment was supplied by Stage Audio Services from Birmingham, trucking by Stage Truck, and the rigging work on site delivered by PTG.
