BANGKOK – P. Audio's recently-acquired Milos MR3 roofing system was used to stage opening festivities for the Red Ant restaurant near Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport. The internal dimensions were 65 by 115 feet, with a total height of more than 49 feet. That allowed 41 feet of headroom for lighting, sound and video gear, with a total weight loading capacity of 17 tons.
The structure was equipped with Milos S3 stage decking system and CM Lodestar hoists. A Milos double-decker tower was also provided to serve as a dressing room and a temporary office for the Red Ant launch.
A crew from P. Audio collaborated with Marek Zubor, chief structural engineer from Milos Guangzhou in China, and Michal Zykan, sales manager from Milos Czech Republic. Together they dealt with challenges including a site exposed to high winds.
Using hidden ballasts to anchor the MR3 system to the ground, the structure was designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 63 miles (102km) per hour – the figure to which all Milos roof systems are rated.
The steel bases of the ballasts are attached to steel-concrete foundations under each of the towers via chemical anchors, which offer a neat and clean look compared to the alternative, which would be six large water tank ballasts per leg. Milos said it would apply this new technique to other temporary structures going forward.
Milos reported that a 12-person crew was able to set up the structure in only four days, even though the crew members were new to this kind of project. P. Audio had chosen Milos based on quality and price. They anticipate using the roof for upcoming theatrical and performance space projects as well.
