Montecasino’s Tuscan-Style Columns Lit with Anolis LEDs

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – For Montecasino, a destination for gaming and entertainment in Fourways, Johannesburg, Declan Randall from Congo Blue and the casino's David Butcher came up with a lighting design for the "pit" gaming table area. They used Anolis ArcSource 3 RGB LED fixtures and an Anolis ArcControl 1024, which was supplied by Anolis' South African distributors, DWR. Montecasino has a Tuscan/Italian style décor, with pillars serving as a strong focal point and wooden beams and greenery creating a vineyard feel. The brief was to create a lighting scheme to enhance the area around Pit 1 and attract people's attention as they walked past, without simultaneously distracting the players. Randall opted to illuminate the pillars with the LED fixtures.

"We wanted a lighting system that would be eye-catching, flexible, low maintenance and energy efficient," noted Randall, adding that fixtures needed to be individually addressed. The requirements of the project steered the designer toward LEDs.

The standard "run" setting is primarily a cross-fade from color to color. with  approximately 38 different colors programmed. But the system is capable of something much more "flashy" if required.

The design and installation also allows for the lighting to be themed – e.g., red for Valentine's Day, green for St Patrick's Day, etc. – but in between any special events, the subtle cross-fading color sequence runs continuously.

"Anolis fittings gave us the output that we needed in an attractive, compact fitting" said Randall. Some of the programming was done off-site, using offline lighting editing software, then uploaded to the control system at Montecasino, needing only a few minor tweaks before the handover to the client.

DWR Distribution made up custom mounting brackets for the 48 fixtures. With a very limited window of opportunity for the installation to be completed on site, as much pre-preparation as possible was done, with the total install taking about 10 hours.
