LONDON – The worlds of British and rock ‘n' roll royalty collided in mid-November, and while the Prince's Trust Rock Gala 2010 didn't generate enough goodwill to keep a mob angered by tuition price hikes from rocking the Prince of Wales' Rolls Royce a few weeks later, its purpose was to raise funds to help young people find jobs in the recession-racked U.K. "Our last performance at the Rock Gala had one aim…to raise money for youngsters struggling to find work after a recession," said Brian May of Queen, referring to the original rock galas of the 1980s. "Unfortunately, we find ourselves in the same situation 20 years on, and I'm helping the best way I know how."
Along with May, the Nov. 17, 2010 event featured fellow Queen band member Roger Taylor, and also Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Status Quo, Mike and the Mechanics, Jamie Cullum, Tom Jones, Alison Moyet, Midge Ure, Tom Chaplin and others, all performing before Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
The event, hosted by comedians Rob Brydon and Barry Humphries as Dame Edna Everage, took place at the Royal Albert Hall, with a lighting design by Simon Tutchener calling for gear suppied by Bandit Lites. It was filmed in 3D and will be broadcast on Dec. 19.
The lighting rig included Martin MAC 2000 Washes, MAC 2000 Profiles, ETC Source 4 Lekos and a web of Thomas trussing, all controlled by a pair of grandMA Consoles.
