RIO DE JANEIRO – LD Peter Gasper updated the lighting system used for Rio's famous Christ the Redeemer monument using LED technology, including 300 Traxon Shield AC XB LED projectors and an e:cue system for control. Osram, parent company to both Traxon and e:cue, agreed to provide the lighting system for a two-year period.
The new system was activated March 1, marking the monument's 80th year. The lighting can be controlled via the Internet or a mobile phone, and if the power is cut, a generator switches on automatically.
"The former lighting system was cost-intensive and required a great deal of work," Gasper noted, citing energy efficiency and enhanced lighting control as advantages with the new system.
"The Monumento Cristo Redentor is without doubt an emblem of Brazil," said Roger Michaelis, general director of Osram in Brazil. "It is a great honor for us to have been able to lend it a new glow."
Osram is being supported in this project by the municipality of Rio de Janeiro and the archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro.
