SGM Ramps Up Production to Meet Demand for X-5 White LED Strobe

REGGIO EMILIA, Italy — SGM says its X-5 white LED strobe, the world’s first professional LED strobe, delivers the same output as conventional high-wattage strobes at one-fifth the power.

“Rental companies can save on two gensets of 150kW each by replacing 100 conventional strobes with our versions,” said Peter Johansen, SGM’s head of R&D.

SGM’s white strobe contains 3,000 LEDs with a 50,000-hour lamp life. Instead of requiring 1600 amps to drive 100 conventional strobes, the X-5 only requires a 300-amp draw, according to the company.

Along with the ability of LED strobes to produce impact comparable to a Xenon flash lamp, the X-5 drew interest for its compact size, array of additional effects and the ability to use larger number of strobes.

The strobes were showcased at Pro Light+Sound Show, and SGM reports that it has already increased its scheduled production of the units to meet demand.

“We believed the concept of an LED strobe would revolutionize the market, but even we had not anticipated this level of response from lighting designers and the global rental community, or the large number of orders we would receive,” said SGM’s commercial director, Giorgio Radice.
