S+H Technical Support Provides for Olivier Awards

LONDON – S+H Technical Support provided their ShowLED RGB Chameleon Starcloth as a backdrop for the 2012 Olivier Awards, which honored excellence in theatre.  The annual event was staged in the main auditorium of the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden and broadcast live on the BBC’s Red Button.

LONDON  – Devon, UK based drapes, starcloth, LED and visual effects specialists S+H Technical Support provided a massive 238 meter wide by 9 meter drop of their ShowLED RGB Chameleon Starcloth, which was used on the high profile 2012 Olivier Awards.

The annual event was staged in the main auditorium of the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden. The internationally recognised Olivier’s honor excellence in professional theatre for West End and other shows in the Capital and it is a huge night out for UK theatre. 

S+H were contacted by Lee Batty, Head of Production for event organizers, the Society of London Theatre.

He was looking for a striking backdrop and a full leg and border dressing solution for the stage, and had previously used S+H’s products, most recently their LED Animation Cloth, on a show for Rolf Harris that he production managed.

Batty also assisted in the visual design and look of the Olivier’s, and says, “We wanted something different from last year that would bring a dynamic and special feel.  I knew the quality and reliability of the S+H cloths already, so it was a natural choice for the event.”

More than 1,500 guests joined the glitter and glamour to see 14 Awards presented covering multiple categories, and enjoyed a cast of 450 perform a lively program of entertainment all against the Chameleon starcloth, and broadcast live on the BBC’s Red Button.

LD was Ben Cracknell. All channels of the fully DMX-able Chameleon starcloth were fed into the grandMA lighting control desk, operated by Alex Passmore for the show. White Light supplied the Lighting equipment.

The flexibility offered by the Chameleon brought plenty of appropriate glamour to the show and provided a stunning backdrop to the action.

It can be set to one color if desired – including white – static or twinkling – or have various different colour and chasing effects applied. It can be integrated into any show at the touch of a button and set to match any themed environment or space.

The Chameleon is made by ShowLED, and S+H Technical Support is its sole UK distributor.

The 2012 Olivier Awards was dominated by the RSC’s new musical Matilda, which won in seven categories.
