DUBAI, U.A.E. – Soaring 2,717 feet in height (828 meters) – more than twice as high as the 1,250-foot-high Empire State Building – the Burj Kahlifa opened with lighting and projection complementing the Jan. 4 fireworks and water effects display for the opening of the $1.5 billion structure. Prisme International coordinated the grand opening festivities, collaborating with Procon Hamburg, Playback Instanbul and Zumbobel subsidiary Space Cannon. The gear list from Space Cannon included 320 7,000-watt Ireos xenon light fixtures and the debut of Space Cannon's 72,000-watt Ramses 2 fixture, which lit the tower from the ground up.
Adrian Smith and engineer Bill Baker of the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the building, which took more than five years to build. The primary contractor was Samsung C&T, Besix and Arabtec serving as subcontractors.
