LONDON – Entertainment lighting specialist White Light was the lead sponsor of TheatreCraft 2011, the annual free workshop and open day that provides anyone aged 17-25 with an introduction to every possible aspect of working backstage in the entertainment industry, from writing to stage management, to wig making to – of course – lighting.
Held Nov. 28 at the London Coliseum, the event kicked off with a welcome speech from leading international theatre designer William Dudley. During the day the hundreds of visitors were able to learn more from those already established in their field, and had the chance to meet representatives from organizations including the ABTT, the Almeida, English National Opera, the National Youth Theatre, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, the Royal Opera House, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Society of British Theatre Designers, the Society of London Theatres, the Stage Management Association and The Theatres Trust as well as colleges including East 15, Guildford, Guildhall, the London College of Fashion, Rose Bruford, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the London School of Film, Media and Performance and the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural.
White Light staff were also on hand to provide an introduction to the power and possibilities of entertainment lighting. “Having immensely enjoyed TheatreCraft last year, we were delighted to sponsor this year’s event,” says White Light’s Managing Director, Bryan Raven. “TheatreCraft offers a unique, friendly and informal meeting ground for those already working in the industry and those hoping to. For those who choose to make their careers in lighting as a result of the event, we look forward to seeing them again in the future.”
“TheatreCraft Day introduces young people to the huge range of careers in the theatre, many of which are of a technical nature,” explains Susan Whiddington, Director of Mousetrap Theatre Projects and a TheatreCraft Partner. “It is fantastic to have White Light as a sponsor, as it not only has a long and respected history of supporting the technical side of the British theatre industry, but is a company keen to share its knowledge with the next generation of theatre makers.”
TheatreCraft is held annually and led in collaboration by the Theatre Royal Haymarket Masterclass Trust, Mousetrap Theatre Projects, ENO, The Society of London Theatre and The National Skills Academy Creative and Culture.
