KINGSTON, U.K. – Kingston University's Drama and Dance Department needed a bright, compact fixture for color washes and more, but was also looking to avoid the need to order scrolls or the weight of moving lights. It turned to White Light for the new SeaChanger Nemo fixture – which includes the new LIFI Plasma lamp as its light source. This plasma lamp gives the Nemo 10,000 lumens of light output from just 285 watts of power – more than from a standard 750W HPL lamp – from a source that also has a 15,000 hour life and a very white light, with a color rendering index value of 92.
Light output is controlled using a glass dowser, capable of dimming down to full black. Nemo then has cyan, magenta, yellow color mixing designed to give a wide color range and the ability to operate quickly (less than one second from clear to full saturation) or smoothly and slowly, according to the needs of the show.
At the front of the light, the Nemo uses the shutter assembly, beam accessories (including gobos) and lens tubes from the standard Source Four range. Kingston University has purchased 90 degree lens tubes with their two Nemos, but part of the fixture can also be used with other lens tubes from their existing Source Four stock.
"The SeaChanger Nemo was our lantern of choice due to the extreme flexibility of the unit. Having CMY color changing capability and the ability to utilise our existing Source Four lens tubes gave us a wide range of uses for the unit," said Andrew Nasrat of Kingston University's Drama and Dance Department. "The Nemo's high intensity plasma light source, coupled with low running costs, were also a high priority for us. We were amazed at how quiet the units are when running, making them ideal for use in a theatre environment."
