LONDON — A woman in her 30s was injured by a 20-by-10-foot Clear Channel LED advertising billboard that fell with its metal framework about 20 feet from the brick façade of a century-old building to the pavement below. The accident took place in South London’s Tooting district about 7:30 a.m. on May 12.
The woman, who was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries to her hip and leg, was reportedly spared more serious injury because a portion of the metal framework hit the pavement, bearing some of the sign’s weight. The combined weight of the sign and the framework was estimated to be about four tons.
Clear Channel, which noted that the sign was one of dozens in a refurbishment rollout, is working with investigators to pinpoint the cause of the collapse. The sign had been installed about two weeks prior, replacing another digital sign in the same spot.
