SYRACUSE, NY – J.R. Clancy named Larry Eschelbacher director of engineering. Before his promotion, Eschelbacher served as the company's manager of controls engineering. In his new role, Eschelbacher will supervise both the controls engineering and mechanical engineering departments. His responsibilities include both off-the-shelf products and custom jobs for performance spaces of every size, from middle schools to the world's most spectacular performing arts centers.
Eschelbacher came to J. R. Clancy in 1994 to manage the company's controls department. Since his arrival, he has designed controls for more than 1,000 motorized rigging projects, from simple up/down operation to complex systems with more than 300 motors.
Some of the most celebrated projects in Eschelbacher's list include the just-completed Carmel Performing Arts Center in Indiana, the Winspear Opera House in Dallas, Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City, and Segerstrom Hall in the Orange County Performing Arts Center in California.
Eschelbacher holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and philosophy from SUNY Albany. A stagehand in IATSE Local 592 since 1979, he earned a second bachelor's degree in electrical computer and systems engineering from r Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1990. He then joined the staff of Hoffend & Sons, Inc., a theatrical rigging manufacturer, where he led the controls engineering department. He left this position in 1994 for J. R. Clancy.
